GGT Bus serving the San Rafael Transit Center
GGT Bus serving the San Rafael Transit Center

It is with pleasure that the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District welcomes you aboard Golden Gate Bus and Ferry Transit (GGT).  This booklet will answer many questions you may have about our lift-equipped and accessible services.  With assistance from the District’s Advisory Committee on Accessibility, GGT continues to meet the transportation needs of seniors and persons with disabilities.

GOLDEN GATE BUS TRANSIT

Riding the bus should be a pleasant experience, giving persons with disabilities and seniors the same freedom provided able-bodied passengers. GGT provides accessible service to and from Sonoma, Marin, San Francisco and Contra Costa counties with amenities that make travel easy, safe, and comfortable.  Our lift-equipped buses already meet most requirements set forth by the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA).  We continually make improvements that may exceed those requirements.  Today, 100 percent of GGT bus service is operated with lift-equipped buses.

Passengers with disabilities who are unable to use standard lift-equipped buses may be eligible for door-to-door paratransit service.  For more information, see the " GGT Intercounty Paratransit Handbook."

GOLDEN GATE FERRY TRANSIT

All Golden Gate Ferries provide accessible daily service between Sausalito or Larkspur and San Francisco.  Ferry crew members are available to assist passengers in boarding and disembarking.  All buses are lift-equipped.

CALL US

Feel free to call a Telephone Information Clerk to clarify any accessibility questions you have about GGT buses or ferries. At GGT we strive to provide the best transportation system possible.  Your comfort, safety and convenience are among our primary considerations.  See phone numbers below.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Types of GGT Service

GOLDEN GATE TRANSIT FERRY SERVICE

Larkspur Ferry Terminal

Larkspur Ferry Terminal

Ferry Routes provide daily service between Sausalito or Larkspur and San Francisco at varying intervals with more frequent service during weekday commute periods (excluding holidays).

GOLDEN GATE TRANSIT BUS SERVICE

Intercounty Service, that is service between counties, consists of basic service and commute service.

Basic Bus Routes provide daily service throughout the day and evening between San Francisco, Marin, Sonoma, and Contra Costa counties.  Buses operate at regular intervals of 30 to 90 minutes depending on the route, time, and day of the week.  Basic Routes include 10, 40/42*, 70 and 80.

*Routes 40/42 are operated by GGT on behalf of the region and is subsidized by regional funds.

Commute Bus Routes supplement Basic Bus Routes providing express commute period service, mornings and evenings, at frequent intervals, Monday through Friday except holidays, between San Francisco, Marin and Sonoma counties.  Commute Routes include 2, 4, 8, 9, 18, 24, 26, 27, 38, 44, 54, 56, 58, 60, 72, 73, 74, 75, 76, 91, 93 and 97.

Local Bus Routes, that is service within Marin County, is operated by GGT under an agreement with Marin Transit. Marin Transit is responsible for establishing the level and extent of service and fares.  These routes provide weekday and limited weekend service within Marin County. Buses operate at regular intervals of 30 or 60 minutes depending on the time of day. Marin Local Routes include 17, 19, 22, 23, 29, 35, 36, 45, 49, 51, 52 and 71. Routes 107, 113, 115, 117, 123, 125, 126, 127, 139, 143, 145 and 153 provide limited service on school days within Marin County.

INTERCOUNTY ADA PARATRANSIT SERVICE

GGT operates intercounty paratransit for eligible patrons
GGT operates intercounty paratransit for eligible patrons

ADA requires that GGT, like other public transit operators, provide paratransit service to persons with disabilities who are unable to use accessible bus or ferry service between counties.  Paratransit service is a special shared-ride service usually operated door to door using accessible vans.  GGT’s intercounty paratransit service operates between Marin, Sonoma, and San Francisco counties within three-quarters of a mile or more of GGT’s basic bus routes.  Intercounty paratransit service is also provided to/from the Richmond/El Cerrito area of Contra Costa County.  GGT provides intercounty paratransit services to ADA-eligible passengers through an agreement with Marin Transit to use its contractor Whistlestop Wheels.  Whistlestop Wheels door-to-door van service is provided by uniformed, professional staff using accessible vans.  Whistlestop Wheels also provides local ADA paratransit service for trips entirely within Marin County on behalf of Marin Transit.

Please refer to the "GGT Intercounty Paratransit Handbook" for additional detailed information.  A copy of the handbook is available by calling Whistlestop Wheels at (415) 454-0964, (800) 454-0964 from San Francisco or Sonoma County or by calling one of the GGT phone numbers on the back cover of this handbook.  The handbook is also available here.

TRANSFERS

TRANSFERS WITHIN THE GOLDEN GATE TRANSIT SYSTEM

Passengers may transfer between GGT buses or between GGT buses and Golden Gate Ferries.  Travel must be in the same general direction within the time period shown on the transfer.  A transfer does not entitle passengers to make stopovers, which are defined as an interruption during the course of a trip.  Transfers CANNOT be used to make a round trip.

Transfers are issued by Bus Operators or Ferry Ticket Agents at the time the fare is paid.  As they pay the fare, passengers should advise the Bus Operator or Ferry Ticket Agent of their destination and intention to transfer to another bus or ferry.  This will ensure that the proper transfer is issued.

TRANSFERS TO OTHER TRANSIT SYSTEMS

PLANNING AN ACCESSIBLE TRIP

Trip Planning

To plan your trip on a GGT bus or ferry, call one of these numbers during the indicated hours.

Tell the Telephone Information Clerk where you are, where you want to go, and when you want to go.  The Telephone Information Clerk will tell you which bus or ferry to take and where and when to board.  Please note that not all GGT bus stops are accessible.

The Golden Gate Bus and Ferry Transit Guide includes schedules.  The Transit System Map provides a detailed map of the GGT service area.  Ask the Telephone Information Clerk to mail you one.  The Accessible Route Map details accessible routes.

TRAVEL TRAINING

GGT provides travel training to assist passengers with boarding, wheelchair securement and exiting procedures at its facilities in San Rafael.  Other specialized training may also be available depending on passenger needs and availability of equipment and personnel.  This training is particularly helpful for passengers who are not eligible for paratransit service or passengers with disabilities who may be using GGT for the first time.  To make a travel training appointment or for more information, please call Customer Relations (415) 257-4563 at least five days in advance to schedule an appointment.

RIDING AN ACCESSIBLE BUS

Boarding the Bus

International Accessibility Symbol

INTERNATIONAL ACCESSIBILITY SYMBOL

All GGT lift-equipped buses carry a blue and white international symbol of accessibility on the lower right hand side of the front and/or rear doors.

COMMUNICATION TOOLS AVAILABLE FOR PERSONS WITH SPEECH, HEARING OR SIGHT DISABILITIES

Bus identification kits are available for passengers who have sight disabilities, hearing disabilities or a speech communication disability.  The kit is designed to signal Bus Operators the route number you wish to travel.  The kits are conveniently pocket-sized, with cards to display the number of the route in a plastic case.  They are available free of charge and may be obtained by calling one of the telephone numbers on the back cover for more information about a bus identification kit.

WHO MAY USE THE PASSENGER LIFT

Passenger lifts are available for passengers using wheelchairs or other mobility aids.  Ambulatory passengers with disabilities or passengers with less visible disabilities, such as heart conditions or breathing ailments that prevent them from climbing stairs, may also use most passenger lifts.  However, for safety reasons, and in compliance with the law, passengers may not stand on the Gillig passenger lifts and it is not recommended that passengers stand on passenger lifts of MCI (401-421) buses.

Standing passengers who need to use the passenger lift to board should step to the inside edge of the platform.  This will ensure adequate overhead clearance.  Be sure to stand with your feet slightly apart to improve balance and use the handrail when available.

All wheelchair patrons using the passenger lift should be able to safely maneuver their chairs.  Electric wheelchair batteries MUST be bolted in place and enclosed in a covered container.  All wheelchairs MUST have operable brakes.  Individuals with large, non-traditional wheelchairs may have difficulty boarding or may not be safely accommodated by GGT.  If you have any concern about your wheelchair being accommodated on GGT, please make arrangements to visit the GGT facility in San Rafael to familiarize yourself with GGT equipment and to determine whether you may encounter any difficulty riding a GGT lift-equipped bus. See "Travel Training".

TYPES OF WHEELCHAIRS ALLOWED ON PASSENGER LIFTS

ADA standards require that passenger lifts accommodate wheelchairs measuring up to 30 inches wide by 48 inches long at a level 2 inches above the ground and weighing no more than 600 pounds when occupied.  Some GGT buses purchased prior to implementation of ADA requirements may not be able to accommodate wheelchairs exceeding these standards.

PASSENGERS USING THE "KNEELING" FEATURE

Persons with disabilities or seniors who require the front door steps to be lowered should ask the Bus Operator to deploy the "kneeling" or lowering step feature.

PRIORITY SEATING

Certain seats on the bus are designated as priority seating for passengers with disabilities and seniors.  The Bus Operator will request non-disabled ambulatory passengers occupying priority seating to move if a passenger with disabilities or a senior boards.  However, ambulatory passengers are not required to relocate to another seat except in the wheelchair securement areas.

THE ROLE OF GGT BUS OPERATORS

GGT Bus Operators have been thoroughly trained in the use of all accessible bus features.  Operators also participate in a training program to enhance their awareness of the needs of seniors and passengers with disabilities.  Bus Operators have been trained about the differences among individuals with disabilities and various kinds of disabilities.  Bus Operators will:

  • Look for waiting passengers with white canes or bus identification kits and use a public address speaker (if available) to announce the bus route to the waiting passenger;

  • Request non-disabled ambulatory passengers to move from the wheelchair securement area or priority seating area when persons with disabilities or seniors board.  Ambulatory passengers are not required to relocate to another seat except in the wheelchair securement area;

  • Direct a passenger in a wheelchair to the wheelchair securement area;

  • Assist with wheelchair and scooter securement;

  • Stop and direct a wheelchair user to the next lift-equipped bus if all wheelchair securement positions are occupied by other wheelchair passengers.  The operator will also advise bus transit dispatch;

  • Provide assistance to persons with disabilities by operating the passenger lift or "kneeling" feature;

  • Remember the destination of a senior or person with
    disabilities who requests the operator to announce their
    destination;

  • Call out all major stops and transfer points including stops requested by passengers;

  • Not physically move passengers but assist in moving a wheelchair upon request;

  • Will require the passenger to permit his or her wheelchair to be secured but will not deny service to any wheelchair user whose chair cannot be secured by either the wheel clamps or "Y" straps except in the case of defective securement equipment.

PAYING YOUR FARE

Bus Operators are not allowed to handle money.  Please deposit the exact fare in the farebox at the front of the bus after you board and show the Bus Operator your Regional Transit Connection Discount Card or other discount identification (See " GGT Bus and Ferry Transit Fare Programs").  If you board by the rear door passenger lift, you may ask a fellow passenger or your personal service assistant to deposit your fare in the farebox.  Special mail-in fare arrangements are available for passengers using a wheelchair, or other passengers who, because of their disability, have significant difficulty handling money and tickets or depositing them in the farebox.  For this program, a special GGT mail-in program designation on the RTC Discount Card is available.  Please call (415) 257-4415 for more information.

TIPS TO MAKE BOARDING SAFER AND EASIER

  • Passengers who wish to use the passenger lift or the "kneeling" feature should be visible to the Bus Operator as the bus approaches the stop.  Please be at the front door when the bus arrives and advise the operator which accessible feature you require.  PASSENGERS USING ACCESSIBLE FEATURES ARE ALLOWED TO BOARD THE BUS FIRST.

  • For RTS buses, please be prepared to move toward the rear door of the bus to use the passenger lift.

  • Passengers must stay back from the curb to allow adequate clearance for the doors to open and the passenger lift platform to extend.

  • For Flxible and Nova buses, please be prepared to move toward the front door of the bus to use passenger lift.

  • For Gillig, MCI (401-421) and MCI (601-632) buses, please be prepared to move toward the mid-section of the bus to use the passenger lift.

  • GGT recommends that passengers using wheelchairs back onto the passenger lift platform.

  • Wheelchair users should roll onto the passenger lift platform as far as possible.  Then LOCK YOUR WHEELCHAIR BRAKES.  If you’re in an electric wheelchair, TURN OFF YOUR POWER.

  • Remember, the MCI (401-421) and Gillig passenger lifts were not designed to accommodate standing patrons.

  • The Bus Operator will raise the passenger lift to the level of the floor inside the bus.  Please hold onto the safety rails (at the sides of the passenger lift or the interior doorway).  These rails are available on all buses except MCI (401-421) buses.  When the passenger lift has stopped, please go to the wheelchair securement area.

  • Have your exact fare and identification ready before boarding the bus.  Discount fares for persons with disabilities and seniors are available.  Special payment arrangements are also available if you cannot reach the farebox or have difficulty handling money.

  • Advise the Bus Operator of your destination when you board and if you would like the Bus Operator to announce your stop.

  • For your safety, GGT policy requires passengers in wheelchairs to remain secured until the bus comes to a complete stop.  DO NOT RELEASE ANY SECUREMENT SYSTEM BEFORE THE BUS COMPLETELY STOPS.

  • Should the lift malfunction and you are unable to board the bus, the Bus Operator will radio central dispatch.  If the next accessible bus will arrive in 30 minutes or less, you will be asked to wait for that bus.  If the wait will be longer than 30 minutes, a back-up bus or paratransit vehicle will be sent to pick you up.

Inside the Bus:  Securement

LOCKING AND SECURING YOUR WHEELCHAIR

WHEELCHAIRS MUST BE SECURED BEFORE THE BUS CAN DEPART.  The Bus Operator will ensure that the wheelchair is secured and will assist with the securement straps and restraining devices if necessary.

WHEELCHAIR SECUREMENTS ON RTS (1017-1243), MCI (401 - 421), AND GILLIG BUSES

Wheelchair securing clamps are used on the RTS buses numbered 1017-1243, MCI buses numbered 401-421, and Gillig buses.  To use the wheelchair clamps, back one wheel into the clamp and it will engage.  To release the wheel from the clamp, push down the release handle and the clamp will release.

Safety belt straps are also available to hold the wheelchair securely in place.  Each strap has a "Y" shaped end with two buckles.  This will enable you to buckle the belt to each side of your wheelchair or attach it around the frame of your wheelchair so that the belt holds the chair rather than your body.  The "Y" straps may be used with or without the wheelchair clamp, but both should be used when possible.  Scooter-type and motorized wheelchairs with wide wheels may not fit into the wheelchair clamps and should use the securement straps instead.  Passengers may also secure their scooters and move to a bus seat if they wish to do so.  For your safety, GGT recommends that wheelchair users provide their own belts to secure themselves into their wheelchairs.

Securement detail pg49b_x.8_50.jpg (15743 bytes)
Currently there are two types of wheelchair securing clamps on Gillig, RTS, and MCI (401-421) buses.  Back one wheel into the clamp and it will engage.  Push down on the release handle and the clamp will release.

WHEELCHAIR SECUREMENTS ON FLXIBLE, NOVA AND MCI (601 - 632) BUSES

Flxible, Nova and MCI (601 - 632) buses do not have wheelchair clamps, but are equipped with safety belt straps to secure the frame of your wheelchair.  "Y" straps have two buckles which can be buckled around each side of your wheelchair or attached around the frame of your wheelchair.  Each securement location is also equipped with a shoulder harness that can be used at the passenger’s discretion.  Supplemental tie down straps, which attach to the floor of the bus, can be used in addition to the "Y" straps, or in situations where the "Y" straps can’t be used.  Scooter-type and motorized wheelchairs with wide wheels should use the "Y" straps to secure their scooter.  Passengers may secure their scooters and move to a bus seat if they wish to do so.

For your safety, GGT recommends that wheelchair users provide their own belts to secure themselves into their wheelchairs.

RECLINER-TYPE WHEELCHAIRS

Because the back support of a reclining wheelchair may need to lean back, securement is generally not possible with clamps.  Recliner-type wheelchairs must be secured by the "Y" straps or additional tie down straps.

For your safety, GGT recommends that recliner-type wheelchair users provide their own belts to secure themselves onto their wheelchairs.

Exiting the Bus

It is important to remember to tell the Bus Operator your destination when you board and, if desired, request the Bus Operator announce it.  This will help the Bus Operator anticipate when you need to exit.

During your trip, be sure to listen for your stop to be announced or, as the bus approaches your stop, push the buzzer bar or signal button to alert the Bus Operator that you wish to disembark.  If you are a wheelchair user, please remain in your seat/seating area until the Bus Operator has cleared you to disembark.  DO NOT RELEASE ANY SECUREMENTS UNTIL THE BUS IS FULLY STOPPED AND THE BUS OPERATOR IS PRESENT.  For your safety, do NOT move to other areas in the bus while being transported.

Passengers who use the passenger lift or the "kneeling" feature are asked to exit the bus after their fellow riders have disembarked.

STANDING PASSENGERS USING THE PASSENGER LIFT

Standing passengers who need to use the passenger lift to disembark should step to the inside edge of the platform.  This will ensure adequate overhead clearance.  Be sure to stand with your feet slightly apart to improve balance and use the handrail when available.  The MCI (401-421) and Gillig passenger lift platforms are not designed for standing passengers.

PASSENGERS USING THE "KNEELING" FEATURE

If you require the lowering step or "kneeling" feature to exit through the front door, please ask the Bus Operator to deploy this feature when you reach the front of the bus.

PASSENGER LIFT PROCEDURES FOR DISEMBARKING PERSONS IN WHEELCHAIRS

  • After the bus has come to a complete stop, wait for the Bus Operator to assist you prior to releasing the securement straps.

  • Release your chair from the securing clamp by depressing the lever located just above the clamp.

  • Release your wheelchair brakes.

  • The Bus Operator will raise a vertical safety barrier on the passenger lift that ensures that the wheelchair cannot roll off the platform.

  • Roll your wheelchair squarely onto the passenger lift platform and then LOCK YOUR WHEELCHAIR BRAKES. IF YOU’RE IN AN ELECTRIC WHEELCHAIR, TURN OFF YOUR POWER.  Please hold the handrail when available.

  • The Bus Operator will lower the passenger lift to the sidewalk or street surface level.

  • After the passenger lift touches down, the Bus Operator will lower the safety barrier.

  • Wait until the safety barrier is lowered before disembarking.

  • Unlock your brakes or turn on your power and roll off the passenger lift.

Accessible Features of RTS Buses

RTS buses are numbered 1017-1067, B1101-B1180, and 1181-1243.  Not all RTS buses have the same accessible features.  The following is a brief description of common RTS features.

"KNEELING" FEATURE

All RTS buses are equipped with a "kneeling" feature.  The front entrance of the bus can be lowered approximately four inches.  This brings the bottom steps of the bus closer to the sidewalk or street and makes boarding easier.

PASSENGER LIFT PLATFORM

The passenger lift platform is located toward the rear on RTS buses.  GGT recommends that wheelchair users back onto the passenger lift as far as possible.  However, patrons may also roll forward onto the passenger lift.  The Bus Operator will then raise a safety barrier at the outside edge of the platform.  Then LOCK YOUR WHEELCHAIR BRAKES. If you’re in an electric wheelchair, TURN OFF YOUR POWER.  Passengers standing on the lift should step to the REAR of the platform and face toward the bus.  Handrails for standing passengers are located inside the rear doorway to the left and right.

"Kneeling" door near rear

The passenger lift will rise to the floor level of the bus.  At this point, unlock your brakes and move the wheelchair across the aisle and into the wheelchair space.  The safety barrier will remain in the raised position until you are secured in the seating area.

PRIORITY SEATING

Certain seats at the front of the bus are designated as priority seating for passengers with disabilities and seniors.  The Bus Operator will request non-disabled ambulatory passengers occupying priority seating to move if a passenger with disabilities or a senior boards.  However, ambulatory passengers are not required to relocate to another seat.

The flip-up seats in the wheelchair securement area are also designated as priority seating and may be used by other passengers when the area is not being used to secure a wheelchair.  Bus Operators will ask these passengers to move when the location is needed to secure a wheelchair.

EXIT SIGNALING BARS

A black signaling bar is located next to the window and across the top of each window.  A yellow signaling bar is located on the back of the folded seat.  The yellow signaling bar makes a different tone than regular passenger chimes.  When you want to signal the Bus Operator that you wish to disembark, push the signaling bar that is most convenient.

A yellow signaling bar is located below the window.  When you want to signal the Bus Operator that you wish to disembark, push the signal bar.

DISEMBARKING THE FLXIBLE

Since wheelchair securement areas are located close to the exit on this bus, GGT requests that passengers in wheelchairs allow ambulatory passengers to disembark first.  Please remain in the wheelchair securement area until the Bus Operator has cleared you to disembark.

Accessible Features of MCI Buses Numbered 601-632

The MCI buses numbered 601 - 632 are 45-feet long, five feet longer than most GGT buses.  The extra length allows for 57 passenger seats (topping the current fleet average by 16 seats) and two forward-facing wheelchair positions.

"KNEELING" FEATURE

Each MCI bus is equipped with a "kneeling" feature.  The front entrance of the bus can be lowered to bring the bottom step closer to the sidewalk or street to make boarding and exiting easier.

PASSENGER LIFT DOORS

The passenger lift doors are located between the front and middle of the bus.  Passengers should remain several feet back from the side of the bus, leaving room for the doors to open and the passenger lift to extend.

PASSENGER LIFT PLATFORM

It may require up to 20 minutes for wheelchair users to board and disembark this bus, because in order to accommodate wheelchairs, the Bus Operator must first slide several seats in the wheelchair securement area out of the way and exit to the outside of the bus before deploying the lift.  GGT recommends wheelchair users enter the platform backwards and roll back onto the lift as far as possible.  Standing passengers should face forward and use the handrails located on both sides of the lift.  The Bus Operator will raise a safety barrier at the outside edge of the platform.  LOCK YOUR WHEELCHAIR BRAKES.  If you’re in an electric wheelchair, TURN OFF YOUR POWER.

The passenger lift will rise to the floor level of the bus.  At this point, unlock your brakes and move the wheelchair into the designated wheelchair securement area.  The Bus Operator will stow the lift then re-enter the bus to confirm you are properly secured.

LOWERING STEP

These MCI buses are equipped with an auxiliary step instead of the kneeling feature.  It is located at the front door of the bus and, when activated, comes out from below the lowest step of the bus.  This auxiliary step may be deployed to assist any passenger with disabilities or senior for easier boarding or exiting.

PASSENGER LIFT DOORS

The MCI passenger lift doors, located in the middle of the bus, open quickly.  Passengers should remain several feet back from the side of the bus, leaving room for the doors to open and the passenger lift to extend.

PASSENGER LIFT PLATFORM

The MCI passenger lift platform is designed for passengers in wheelchairs, not standing passengers.  There are no handrails on or near the passenger lift except at the seat level of the bus.  For safety reasons, GGT recommends standing passengers not use the passenger lifts of MCI (401-421) buses.  Wheelchairs should be maneuvered onto the platform facing the front of the bus.  LOCK YOUR WHEELCHAIR BRAKES.  If you’re in an electric wheelchair, TURN OFF YOUR POWER.  Once on the passenger lift platform, a safety barrier will rise.  Then, the passenger lift operates like an elevator rising within the bus to floor level.
